Is It Time to See a Chiropractor? What Your Neck Is Trying to Tell You

Is It Time to See a Chiropractor? What Your Neck Is Trying to Tell You

We all wake up with a crick in the neck occasionally or feel some stiffness after a long day hunched over a laptop. But how do you know when that neck pain is just a temporary annoyance versus a signal that something more significant is happening? When is it time to get professional help?

Let me share some simple ways you can assess your own neck health and recognise when your spine is waving a white flag.

The Posture Check: What Your Mirror Knows

Your posture tells a story about what’s happening with your spine—and it’s a story you can read yourself with nothing more than a mirror and a moment of honesty.

Try this quick posture check:

  1. Stand sideways next to a mirror (or have someone take a side photo of you)
  2. Look at your natural standing position
  3. Notice the position of your ears in relation to your shoulders

In ideal alignment, your ear should line up directly over your shoulder. For every 2.5 cm (1 inch) your head moves forward from this position, the effective weight on your spine increases by about 4.5 kg (10 pounds). That’s like strapping a bowling ball to your neck!

If you notice your head jutting forward (what we call “forward head posture”), your neck is working overtime, and the joints in your cervical spine are under abnormal stress. This isn’t just about looking slumped—it’s about spinal joints that are stuck in unhealthy positions, unable to move through their normal range.

The Range of Motion Test: Your Neck’s Cry for Help

Your neck should move freely in multiple directions. Limited range of motion isn’t just inconvenient—it’s a sign that your spinal joints aren’t gliding properly. Here’s a simple self-assessment:

  1. Sit comfortably and try to touch your chin to your chest
  2. Look up toward the ceiling
  3. Turn to look over each shoulder
  4. Tilt your ear toward each shoulder

Pay attention to:

– How far can you move in each direction

– Whether the movement is smooth or jerky

– If one side feels different from the other

– Where do you feel resistance or pain

If you can’t complete these movements, or if they cause pain, your spinal joints likely aren’t moving correctly. When a joint is restricted (what chiropractors call “subluxation”), it affects everything around it—muscles tighten, nerves get irritated, and inflammation develops.

When Joints Don’t Move, Pain Moves In

Here’s what’s fascinating about your spine: each vertebra needs to move independently AND work in harmony with the others. When one joint gets stuck, it creates a chain reaction.

Imagine a team of rowers on a boat. If one person gets their oar stuck and can’t row, what happens? Everyone else has to work harder, the boat might veer off course, and the whole system becomes inefficient.

The same thing happens in your neck. When one spinal joint isn’t moving correctly, the joints above and below compensate by moving too much. This creates:

  1. Uneven wear and tear (like car tires that need alignment)
  2. Muscle imbalances (some too tight, others too weak)
  3. Nerve irritation (as the spaces where nerve roots exit through become compromised)
  4. Inflammation (your body’s response to these mechanical problems)

All these factors combine to create that nagging pain that over-the-counter medications just temporarily mask.

Red Flags: When to Call a Chiropractor Right Away

While some neck discomfort can wait, certain signs suggest you should seek professional care promptly:

  1. Pain that radiates down your arm
  2. Numbness or tingling in your hands or fingers
  3. Headaches that start at the base of your skull
  4. Noticeable decrease in your ability to turn your head
  5. Pain that’s worse in the morning and improves somewhat with movement
  6. Clicking or grinding sensations when you move your neck
  7. Pain that persists beyond a week despite rest and over-the-counter care

These symptoms suggest that your spinal joints aren’t just stiff—they’re affecting your nervous system, which controls everything in your body.

The Connection You Might Be Missing

Most people don’t realise that neck pain is rarely just about pain. Those same nerves that exit your cervical spine control your shoulders, arms, and even influence your head and face. This explains why neck issues often come with a constellation of seemingly unrelated symptoms:

  1. Headaches
  2. Dizziness
  3. Jaw tension
  4. Shoulder pain
  5. Arm weakness
  6. Even problems with focus and concentration

If you’re experiencing any of these alongside your neck discomfort, your body is sending a clear message that your spinal alignment needs professional attention.

What a Chiropractor Sees That You Can’t

When you visit a chiropractor, they’re looking beyond just your pain. Using specialized assessment techniques, they can identify:

  1. Which specific spinal joints aren’t moving properly
  2. How your posture is affecting the mechanics of your spine
  3. Whether nerve function is compromised
  4. Which muscle imbalances are contributing to your problem
  5. How your daily habits might be perpetuating the issue

They’re essentially reading the story your body is telling—often catching chapters you didn’t even know were being written.

The beauty of chiropractic care is that it addresses the root cause of your pain by restoring proper joint movement, which allows your body to heal naturally. Rather than just masking symptoms, it’s about correcting the underlying dysfunction.

So if you’ve been rubbing that sore neck for days, watching your posture slump in the mirror, or noticing that looking over your shoulder is becoming a whole-body affair, it might be time to let a professional help your spine get back on track.

Your neck will thank you for it.

How Your Posture Is Talking to Your Brain

How Your Posture Is Talking to Your Brain

Ever had one of those days where you just can’t think straight? Where focusing feels like trying to catch fog with your bare hands? Before you blame it on a lack of sleep or too much stress, you might want to check something else: your posture.

That’s right—the way you’re holding your head right now could be messing with your brain function. Let me explain.

The Weight of the World (On Your Neck)

Look around next time you’re in public. What do you see? People hunched over phones, necks craned forward, shoulders rounded. We call this “forward head posture,” and it’s become an epidemic in our digital age.

Here’s what’s happening: Your head weighs about 4.5 – 5.5 kg (10-12 pounds) when it’s balanced properly atop your spine. But for every 2.5 cm (1 inch) your head moves forward, the effective weight on your spine increases by about 4.5 kg (or 10 pounds)! That means if your head is just 7.5cm (or 3 inches) forward (which is common), your neck muscles are dealing with the equivalent of an 18 kg (or 40-pound) head.

Your Neck: The Highway to Your Brain

“But what does this have to do with my brain?” I hear you asking.

Everything, actually. Your spinal cord is like the main highway connecting your brain to the rest of your body. All those important neural signals travel up and down this pathway. When your head juts forward, it creates tension and compression in your upper cervical spine, right where it connects to your brain stem.

This compression can:

  1. Restrict blood flow to your brain (and your brain is kind of a blood hog, using about 20% of your body’s oxygen supply)
  2. Put pressure on nerves that affect cognitive function
  3. Trigger inflammation that impacts how clearly you can think
  4. Disrupt cerebrospinal fluid flow that bathes and nourishes your brain

Brain Fog Is Real

That mental cloudiness you feel after hours at your desk? It’s not all in your head—well, actually, it is, but it’s likely connected to your posture! When your posture is compromised, your brain has to work harder to process information while receiving less of the resources it needs.

Many of my patients describe it as feeling like they’re “thinking through molasses.” They struggle to find words, lose their train of thought, or find it hard to concentrate. And often, they never connect these symptoms to their forward-leaning posture.

Your Brain on Good Posture

The good news? This is reversible. When you restore proper head alignment, magical things can happen:

  1. Blood flow to your brain improves
  2. Nerve pressure is reduced
  3. Inflammation decreases
  4. Brain-body communication clears up

One patient described the sensation after her first adjustment as “like someone turned up the brightness on my brain.” Another said it felt like “finally tuning in a radio station that had been static for years.”

The Two-Minute Posture Check

Want to give your brain a quick boost? Try this:

  1. Sit or stand tall, imagining a string pulling you up from the crown of your head
  2. Gently draw your chin back (not down), creating what some call a “double chin” (don’t worry, no one’s looking!)
  3. Feel the back of your neck lengthen
  4. Keep your eyes level with the horizon
  5. Take three deep breaths

Even this simple reset can improve blood flow to your brain and reduce nerve compression. Do it several times a day, especially when you’ve been looking down at screens.

Remember, your brain doesn’t exist in isolation from the rest of your body. The way you physically hold yourself affects how you mentally perform. In fact, I’d argue that one of the fastest ways to change how your brain works is to change how you hold your head.

So next time you’re feeling foggy or unfocused, check in with your posture before reaching for that extra cup of coffee. Your brain will thank you for it.
